Southern seeks PRB, suppliers await decisions as ’20 nears

In a year that may best be forgotten by coal sellers, the end of 2019 is filled with glimmers of hope: Southern Co. is again in the market, this time for first-quarter deliveries of Powder River Basin coal. Meanwhile, suppliers await word of what Southern Co. will do with an October RFP that sought offers on 2020-2022 deliveries of up to 3 million tons a year of bituminous coal. Proposals were due Oct. 18 and one potential supplier said Monday he was still awaiting word.
