Singapore—The strong demand for coal in Southeast Asia means that the region is not ready to wean off the fossil fuel in the near future, even as the push for renewable energy increases, panelists and participants at the Singapore International Energy Week said. At the International Energy Agency-Singapore forum held at the SIEW on Wednesday, panelists agreed that coal will still appeal to the region due to its “affordability, scalability and transportability.” “Why coal? It’s pretty straightforward, it’s affordable, it’s scaleable and it’s transportable, that’s why you see coal, [but] the challenge of coal is, its emission is high,” Dr. Vijay from ExxonMobil Research and Engineering Company said at the event.
