Gold sinks more than $40/oz ahead of Fed minutes release

COMEX gold futures tumbled more than $40/oz to close below $2,000/oz Aug. 19 as the US dollar strengthened sharply before the release of the Federal Reserve’s meeting minutes for July. Gold for December delivery, the active month, closed $42.80/oz lower at $1,970.30/ oz after the market sold off sharply in midmorning from the $2,000/oz level. The dollar began rallying sharply in European trading against the euro and pound sterling shortly after 10:30 am ET and eventually reached the mid-$1.18 and low $1.31 levels, respectively.
