COMEX gold jumps $16/oz as dollar, bond yields fall ahead of Fed meeting

COMEX gold futures jumped nearly $16/oz Sept. 14 despite a strong rally in US equities, as the dollar retreated against other major currencies and bond yields slipped. Gold for December delivery, the active month, closed $15.80/oz higher at $1,963.70/oz after a rally early in the session stalled at $1,970/ oz in mid-morning and eased ahead of the close. The rally in gold came on the back of a falling dollar, which began retreating against the euro in European trading and eventually fell to the upper $1.18 level before recouping some of its losses in the afternoon. In addition, yields on the 10-year Treasury note fell to 0.65% in early-morning trading before rising again in the afternoon.
