Anglo American Platinum forms JV to develop next generation battery technology

Anglo American Platinum and Canadian miner Platinum Group Metals on Monday unveiled a joint venture to be known as Lion Battery Technologies to develop next-generation platinum and palladium bat- tery technology. “Early indications are that lithium air and lithium sulfur batteries could use 0.5 oz to 1.0 oz [platinum] and [palladium] to produce orders of magnitude improvements in the performance of” battery electric vehicles, NOAH Capital Markets mining analyst René Hochreiter said in a note Monday. “This is massively positive for PGM producers and demand for” platinum and palladium.
