Swift recovery not assured at LKAB Kiruna iron ore mine

London—Swedish miner LKAB is yet to move back to full capacity at its biggest iron ore complex in Kiruna following an earthquake, which could hit future pellet supplies. So far, contract-based iron ore sales commitments and agreed loading programs are assured -- the company has not declared force majeure, according to market sources. A longer impact at Kiruna was expected to strain forward sales volumes, including spot availability into China and global markets. A fast return to full output at Kiruna is being hampered as the central core of the earthquake’s damage in the mine mountain is yet to be fully assessed. Four of the 11 production blocks were temporarily closed last week, according to the company.
