US steel plate prices unchanged as SSAB Americas hikes prices

Pittsburgh—US steel plate prices remained rangebound in the trading week ended Oct. 16, while SSAB informed customers it would be raising plate prices by $50/st, effective immediately. The daily Platts TSI US plate index was $1.75 higher on the week at $638/st on a delivered Midwest basis, and was flat from Oct. 15. Sources had indicated market conditions were mostly unchanged prior to the price hike, which kicked off the fourth round of plate price increases in the US since late August. Still, the move was anticipated by some market sources due to the inverted spread between plate and hot-rolled coil prices. Since Oct. 7, HRC prices have remained above plate prices, with the spread standing at nearly $15/st on Oct. 16, according to S&P Global Platts’ pricing data.
