US-sanctioned El Aissami named Venezuela industry minister

Venezuela has named Tareck El Aissami, a former vice president sanctioned by the US over allegations of corruption, money laundering and drug trafficking, as its new basic industry minister, responsible for the control of all steel companies in the country. In January 2017, the US Treasury Department blacklisted El Aissami and sanctioned all negotiations with parties under his command. Canada also sanctioned El Aissami in September 2017, citing the lack of constitutional rule in Venezuela after elections there.
