Neonatal resuscitation

Summary Resuscitation of babies at birth is a practical skill based on a sound understanding of the physiology of fetal asphyxia. A team approach is vital, and the process should ensure lung inflation before other interventions. Local planning for all eventualities should be agreed and each event recorded in detail. Audit of the process and outcome is essential. The Resuscitation Council (UK) runs a nationally endorsed training course, Newborn Life Support, and this should be a prerequisite for all staff involved in the delivery and care of babies. Supervision is then needed to develop proficiency. The role of drugs and oxygen during resuscitation need to be clarified by further research.
