Six months after the US and China signed the Phase 1 trade deal, high-level officials from both sides will hold a video conference on Saturday to review the agreement and progress made. China's purchases of overall US energy products over the first half of 2020, at an estimated $1.06 billion, are unlikely to impress the US side, as they remain well below the almost $25 billion that China has committed to buy this year. The January energy targets, which foresaw China buying an extra $52.4 billion worth of US energy products over 2020 and 2021, were always seen as extremely ambitious. The coronavirus outbreak, together with the plunge in oil prices, have made meeting them even more of a challenge.
