INTERNATIONAL: Industry coalition SEALNG has flagged up the air quality and public health benefits of LNG as a marine fuel, and said that assessing the case for LNG purely from a greenhouse gas (GHG) point of view is “not responsible”. “LNG emits zero sulfur oxides (SOx) and virtually zero particulate matter (PM). Compared to existing heavy marine fuel oils, LNG emits 90% less nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions. As regards GHG in the maritime sector, realistic reductions of up to 20% are achievable now with LNG,” the group said in a statement apparently in response to a recent report that found LNG as a marine fuel is “incapable” of achieving the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) target to halve climate emissions from ships by 2050.
