Shell curbs gas drilling in Bolivia as political vacuum spurs violent protests

Shell is temporarily dialling down upstream operations in Bolivia and other oil majors are reportedly following suit, after the country was plunged into a political vacuum by the resignation of president Evo Morales amid violent protests in response to allegations of electoral fraud during last month's general election. Shell's Jaguar exploration well has a reduced team in the field, civil works have paused at its Yapucaiti exploration well, and administrative offices in Santa Cruz and La Paz have been closed “as a precautionary measure,” a spokesperson told Gas Matters Today on Tuesday. Total and Repsol have also halted or limited exploration drilling but gas production has not been affected, it is understood.
