摘要

On 1 August, the Bangladeshi High Court ruled that the registration of Jamaat-e-Islami (Jel) - the largest Islamist political party in Bangladesh - as a political party was illegal. Practically, this means that the JeI can no longer participate in elections. It is not yet clear what will happen to JeI MPs. Protests broke out in various cities almost immediately, including in the capital Dhaka, Khulna, Sylhet, and Bogra, with JeI activists setting fire to dozens of vehicles and blocking major highways. Public opinion in Bangladesh has become increasingly polarised over JeI in the past several months as a result of the ongoing war crimes trials relating to the 1971 war of independence.
