Angola’s ruling party has claimed victory following general elections on Wednesday that will usher in a new president, Joao Lourenco, to the Opec state for the first time since 1979. While election officials are still counting votes, the People’s Movement for the Liberation of Angola, which has ruled since independence in 1975, said it was on course for a two-thirds majority. However, the opposition National Union for the Total Independence of Angola claims the majority will be much smaller.
