Traditionally known as major LNG buyers, Japanese companies are now looking to supply the superchilled gas to Australia, which is set to overtake Qatar as the world's largest LNG producer by the end of this decade. This ironic role reversal in the buyer-seller relationship was underscored by a memorandum of understanding signed this month between Japan's Jera, Japanese trading house Marubeni and Australia's Squadron Resources, to carry out a feasibility study on developing an LNG import terminal at a port in New South Wales (NSW) in southeastern Australia.
