The UK's greenhouse gas emissions fell by 8.6% to 574.6 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent in 2009, according to provisional government figures released Thursday. Carbon dioxide emissions - which account for roughly 85% of the six greenhouse gases covered by the Kyoto protocol - dropped 9.8% to 480.9 million tons, with an estimated 39% coming from the energy supply sector. About 25% came from transport, 15% from general business and 16% from residential use of fossil fuels, according to a Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) breakdown.
