The fatal blowout at BP’s Macondo explo- ration well in the US Gulf of Mexico shook investors during the final week of April, as concerns over the mounting costs prompted a major sell-off of the company’s stock. Although the market’s initial reaction to the Apr. 20 incident was only moderately nega- tive, BP’s shares plunged last week as the oil spill spread and estimates of the potential cost to the UK supermajor rose. In all BP lost more than $25 billion in market capitalization.
