To start the workday, Aimee Byrley walks around the office and says hello to each of her co-workers. Byrley, a self-titled extrovert, said she functions better when she's surrounded by her team at Hendrick Automotive Group's consolidated accounting office in Cary, N.C., which covers eastern parts of the state and Virginia. The Cary office processes nearly 3,000 new- and used-vehicle sales monthly. "With 90 people, I don't get to have a lot of one-on-one conversations every day with everyone," she said. "But I do try and make it a point - at a very minimum - to start my day by getting out and just saying 'Hello' and 'Good morning' and 'How was your day?' I feel like that's really important." In 2014, Byrley worked with a small team to consolidate an acships, but they were segmented and each person focused on one store. "What we developed was a team system," Byrley said. "Each of the functions in the accounting office is now seated in a team. If you bill out the retail car deals, you work with a team of about 10 billers who all do the same function as you."
