Bulk shipments give CP boost in second quarter

Canadian and northern US rail carrier Canadian Pacific (CP) reported an 8pc increase in carloads during the second quarter, as it benefited from big gains in bulk commodities, particularly from potash. The company saw a 30pc gain in potash carloads, a 13pc gain in grain and a 10pc gain in coal. In total, CP hauled 664,000 carloads in the quarter, compared with 614,000 in the same period in 2016.
