Japanese thermal coal imports fall in april

Japanese coal imports fell on the year for a third straight month in April, with lower coal burn and comparatively high stocks likely weighing on demand early this summer. The country imported 8.5mn t of lignite and bituminous and sub-bituminous coal in April, according to provisional data from the ministry of finance, compared with 8.7mn t in the same month last year. Receipts have now fallen on the year by more than 200,000t/month in the past three months, but year-to-date imports of nearly 38mn t are broadly flat compared with January-April 2018 because of a strong influx of coal in January.
