Japanese coal imports fell on the year for a third straight month in April, with lower coal burn and comparatively high stocks likely weighing on demand early this summer. The country imported 8.5mn metric tonnes of lignite and bituminous and sub-bituminous coal in April, according to provisional data from the ministry of finance, compared with 8.7mn t in the same month last year. Receipts have now fallen on the year by more than 200,000t/month in the past three months, but year-to-date imports of nearly 38mn t are broadly flat compared with January-April 2018 because of a strong influx of coal in January.
