New Synthetic Strategies for the Management of Chagas Disease (American Trypanosomiasis)

A major health problem facing humanity nowadays is constituted by the so-called "neglected diseases" that affect the world's poorest people and cause severe health burdens. Lack of potable water and wastewater treatment and poor sanitation and healthcare are directly linked to poverty and contribute to the spread of these diseases. Moreover, although neglected diseases impact large populations and exert numerous victims, they rarely kill quickly and therefore lack mainstream news media coverage. Pharmaceutical companies are reluctant to invest in efficient management of these conditions because of uncertainty of recovery of their R&D investment. The national governments of the affected countries are helped mainly by global health organizations and private foundations in their fight against these conditions.
