The wildfires that began to rage in Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada on May 1 and led to the evacuation of the town's entire population of 88'K and forced the shutdown of a number of oilsands operations in the area that reduced oilsands output by 1.07MM b/d as of May 13 appear to be beginning to weaken, allowing firefighters greater success in bringing the fires under control. The fires weakening is also allowing companies to begin to assess oilsands operations and restart production in some instances. With most of the oilsands operations being located several km north and south of the city, the wildfires were not expected to inflict any major damage at these sites. Analysts did note that storage tanks holding various chemicals at oilsands operations would be the most susceptible to fire-related damage, and most companies have safeguards including fire breaks and have employed fire crews to extinguish fires should they get near their plants.
