Cotton has traditionally been grown in four main regions of Turkey, namely the Aegean (Ege), Antalya, Cukrova (Chukurova) and the Southeast regions, respectively. Cotton production in the Aegean Region is very sensitive to the prevailing market prices and the prices of alternative crops. The difficulty of applying mechanized harvesting, high labor costs, relatively small land ownership, no new significant advances in yields, unattractive cotton price developments, availability of alternative crops, insufficient governmental support and sometimes adverse weather conditions have all contributed to a stagnation in cotton production from this region. Cotton production in the Antalya Region has not shown any significant variation, since the area devoted to cotton has not changed much over the years. The Chukurova Region, on the other hand, has also very fertile lands suitable to almost all types of agriculture typical to the Mediterranean climate. This area also suffers the same drawbacks mentioned for the Aegean Region, hence no production increase. In fact, judging from the trends of recent years, a certain decrease is expected from this region.
