ANALYSIS: CONCEPT OF VALUE-BASED ASSESSMENT

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence is proposing that value-based assessment (VBA) looks at two additional features for assessing the cost per quality-adjusted life year (QALY) gained for a treatment: burden of disease and wider societal impact. Omar Ali, a formulary pharmacist and external adviser to NICE, told The Journal, that there are now two ways that a medicine can gain a higher value: 1. The basic cost per QALY threshold still applies at ￡20,000 2. Then an additional leeway will be given for burden of illness (ie, increase the cost per QALY).
