THE National Institute for Health and Care Excellence has revealed details of how it intends to assess the value of a medicine. NICE was charged with assessing the value of medicines under the Department of Health's planned value-based pricing system last year (PJ 2013;290:363). The system was due to come into effect this month, but now looks set to be introduced towards the end of 2014. Subject to public consultation next month, NICE intends to incorporate an assessment of a medicine's "value" into its technology appraisals by considering burden of illness and wider societal impact.
