No vision for pharmacy in England

I was impressed with the Scottish Government's 10-year plan for pharmacy called a "Prescription for excellence".This has been described as "ground-breaking, courageous and visionary" (PJ 2013;291:304). It does not confine itself with tinkering with the current system, but expands the role of pharmacists in the community towards being independent prescribers. It also puts the individual pharmacist at the centre of pharmaceutical care. Patients will register with a named pharmacist because, as the Chief Pharmaceutical Officer for Scotland Bill Scott says: "It is something that patients have said they want."
