Green light for nalmefene to be used within NHS Scotland

NALMEFENE (Selincro), a new treatment for alcohol dependence, has been approved for use within NHS Scotland by the Scottish Medicines Consortium. Four further medicines were accepted for use and one for restricted use in the SMC's latest round of decisions published this week. Nalmefene is indicated for reducing alcohol consumption in adult patients with alcohol dependence who have a high drinking risk level but who do not require immediate detoxification. It blocks opiate receptors to reduce cravings and is taken when there is a perceived risk of drinking alcohol.
