SELECTIVE serotonin reuptake inhibitor use during pregnancy does not delay fetal body growth, but doubles the risk of preterm birth, new findings suggest. A prospective, population-based study, published onlinein the Archives of General Psychiatry (5 March 2012), involved 7,696 pregnant women. A total of 7,027 (91.3 per cent) had no or low symptoms of depression and were used as the control group. Of those who had clinically relevant depression symptoms, 570 (7.4 per cent) did notreceive drug treatment and 99 (1.3 per cent) were treated with SSRIs.
