PATIENTS at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes should be offered a programme of intensive lifestyle change to prevent or delay onset of the condition, the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence recommends.New public health guidance from the institute, published this week, outlines a stepped approach for identifying those at risk of type 2 diabetes. A validated risk-assessment score should be used, with or without a blood test - either fasting blood glucose or HbA_(1c) - to confirm those at high risk.Community pharmacists are among the healthcare professionals who should be encouraging and carrying out risk assessments (see Panel), NICE suggests, adding that those involved should ensure the results are passed on to GPs.
