Antidepressants no benefit to dementia patients

PATIENTS with dementia do not benefit from taking sertraline or mirtazapine to treat depression, and are at an increased risk of side effects from the drugs, according to a UK study published online (Lancet 18 July 2011). Researchers randomised 326 patients with dementia and depression to receive sertraline, mirtazapine or placebo. They found no differences in depression-score reductions between treatment and placebo groups after three months.
