Pharmacists who share smartcards to access electronic prescribing systems should be able to explain and justify their reasons for doing so, the General Pharmaceutical Council has said. However, it reminded pharmacists that smartcards should not routinely be shared. A GPhC spokesman said the council would take a "risk-based approach" and consider smartcard sharing in light of GPhC standards, adherence to legal requirements and good practice guidance, such as local protocols for data sharing.
