The case for a 'British specials formulary'

I wish to draw attention to the Royal Pharmaceutical Society's "Good practice guidance on the procurement and supply of pharmaceutical specials" (Pharmacy Professional,june 2010, p27).On reading the three case studies, I am reminded that there is a lack of information on the stability, bioavailability and efficacy of extemporaneous preparations. Pharmacists have shared formulations or improvised them, often in emergency situations, with little or no scientific basis to the preparations. Why are we in this situation? It is because there is no national formulary of validated extemporaneous or special preparations for prescribers and pharmacists to use.
