DoH to review specials' prices to improve value

New arrangements for the pricing of specials are being worked on by the Department of Health and the Pharmaceutical Services Negotiating Committee, the DoH has confirmed. The announcement comes after a BBC investigation revealed that the cost of specials to the NHS in England had risen from ￡57m to ￡160.5m in four years. The BBC investigation went on to suggest that if the price of a special was limited to ￡75 per item, a saving of nearly ￡72m could be made. A spokeswoman for the DoH told The Journal that the DoH recognises the system needs to be reformed because the current reimbursement arrangements do not incentivise competition between manufacturers.
