Risks of using the wrong strength phenol product are highlighted in a "signal" issued by the National Patient Safety Agency. The NPSA states that confusion over different phenol strengths has resulted in severe harm to a child. In a recendy reported case, a patient was injected with liquefied phenol (80 per cent) into the rectal submucosa instead of oily phenol (5 per cent).The patient suffered severe tissue loss and needed emergency surgery.
