Research conducted by the University of Leicester NHS Trust has highlighted the need for more research into the potentially harmful substances present in liquid medicines given to premature babies. There are few data on the safety of excip-ients contained in liquid medicines — chemicals added to medicines to improve their taste, absorption and to prolong shelf life, the authors of the study say, However they stress that no causal link between excipient exposure and outcomes has been made as a result of the investigation.
