HIV protection with tenofovir gel use

Use of tenofovir vaginal gel before and after sex offers significantly greater protection against HIV than placebo among women at high risk of the disease, a recent study reveals. Researchers who conducted the CAPRISA 004 trial, published online in Science (19 July 2010), found the gel reduces HTV incidence by 39 per cent overall, and by 54 per cent in women who applied the gel more than 80 per cent of the time (high adherence users).
