Antihypertensives should not be restricted to those with high blood pressure

Use of blood pressure lowering drugs should not be restricted to people with high blood pressure, argue the authors of a meta-analysis published on 20 May 2009 on BMJ Online.They suggest that offering antihypertensives to people "above a certain age", regardless of their blood pressure, would prevent future heart attacks and strokes with minimal adverse effects and would allow guidelines on the use of antihypertensive agents to be simplified.
