In a not so greatly lit corridor, metres away from the excited chatter of schoolchildren amid hominid and hyena skulls, demonstrations of ocean density flows and biophotonics, robots and a Bart Simpson snot-firing machine, were four rather striking portraits at the Cheltenham Science Festival last week.
