May 12 is International Nurses Day, commemorating the birth of Florence Nightingale in 1820. Each year, the International Council of Nurses (ICN), a federation of 130 national nursing associations that represents more than 13 million nurses, marks the occasion with a kit to further professional development. This year's kit is Closing the gap: from evidence to action. The choice of topic is surprising in its lateness, given the pivotal influence that evidence-based practice has already achieved at the heart of other professions allied to health, and implies worry-ingly that contemporary nursing is not evidence-based.
