These are difficult times for European science, not only in Greece (July 28, p 326), but also in Spain-another European country whose economy has collapsed owing to the debt crisis. The Spanish Government's research and development budget has decreased since 2009, with an accumulated decline exceeding 35%. This cut is compounded by inflation of roughly 2% per year and reduced funding by regional governments with competences in research; in fact, some of these regions have started dismantling well equipped research institutes funded by the European Regional Development Fund.
