In The Lancet,PhilippJungebluth and colleagues report the innovative management of a recurrent primary tracheal mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the distal trachea and both main bronchi, causing airway obstruction. Because of the extent of the tumour, this patient was not a candidate for tracheal resection and primary reconstruction. In 2008, the same group reported surgical resection of a left main bronchus and reconstruction with a decellularised native airway scaffold seeded with patient-derived cells. In the latest study by this group, a more extensive tracheobronchial graft was generated based on a tailor-made synthetic nanocomposite polymer in the shape of the patient's airway.
