Frederick Burkle and Edbert Hsu (Jan 8, p 106) call for a systematic scientific investigation of human stampedes. Although we support this call in the face of increasing urbanisation and global population growth, their Comment neglects to mention that the study of human collective behaviour (including that of large crowds) is already a well developed subject area that is investigated by physicists and behavioural biologists alike.
