In the 1990s, the anti-tuberculosis community realised that HIV/AIDS contributed to a substantial increase in tuberculosis cases. Their reaction was to call on tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS programmes to join hands in tackling both diseasesIn 2007, the anti-tuberculosis community decided to do something about tobacco smoking, which according to study findings was the reason for an even greater proportion of tuberculosis cases. Their reaction was to appeal to tobacco control programmes to join tuberculosis programmes in tackling both scourges.
