Editorial Comment: The notion of nephron dosing as an important predictor of transplant outcome has gained traction in the last several years. According to this concept, the more functioning nephrons that are transplanted, the better the kidney function achieved. Several corollaries have been proposed, including the notion that female donor kidneys will not do as well compared to male kidneys. Several studies have supported this outcome. Whether this finding is due to a smaller nephron dose from the average smaller size of females or some other intrinsic factor remains unclear.
