South African transport workers went on strike on May 10 after the union Satuwu rejected the offer of Transnet, the national infrastructure and transport provider, for an across-the-board pay increase of 11%. The following day a second union, Utatu, brought its workers out on strike. Together, the two unions represent 39,000 of Transnet's 54,000-strong workforce. The strike has been endorsed by Cosatu, the umbrella organisation for trade unions in South Africa. Transnet management had increased the offer from 8% shortly before the strike began, but the union has been holding out for a rise of 15%.
