Challenges to Farmworker Organizing in the South: From the Southern Tenant Farmers Union to the Farm Labor Organizing Committee's Mt. Olive Campaign

During a 1992-94 investigation of ethnic relations in South Florida, several of us asked Guatemalan, Haitian, and Mexican farmworkers about their participation in labor unions and other manifestations of group empowerment (Griffith et al, 2001). We were working with a loose, open definition of power, allowing those we interviewed room to relate any incidents and describe any behaviors that they believed facilitated or resulted from membership in any political community. That community could be a labor union, a church involved in human rights issues, an ethnic organization, or some other political body.
