THE UK government has announced a new apprenticeship scheme that aims to produce an extra 100,000 engineering technicians over the next five years. The scheme will be backed by a £10m (US$15,4m) grant from the Gatsby Foundation, and was created by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, the Institution of Civil Engineers, and the Institution of Engineering and Technology. It will encourage people to sign up for existing apprenticeship programmes as well as newly-created schemes.
