Paradise lost: Coal-to-gas court challenge turned back

A U.S. District Court judge has turned back a challenge from the Kentucky Coal Association and others over the Tennessee Valley Authority's plans to idle two coal-fired units at the Paradise Fossil Plant. A TVA spokesman said that the federal utility is proceeding with plans to permit and build a replacement natural gas unit. The two targeted units 1 and 2 - each with a rated capacity of 704 MW - typically burn coal from nearby counties in western Kentucky and Southern Illinois. Coal is transported to the plant by truck, rail and barge. The largest unit, 1,150-MW Unit 3, will continue to burn coal and operate for the foreseeable future, TVA spokesman Scott Brooks said. That unit is fully scrubbed.
