Houston-Operational issues stemming from near-full crude storage tanks in Cushing, Oklahoma, pushed barrels on to the US Gulf Coast, leading to another record high volume there, US Energy Information Administration data showed Wednesday. Cushing has seen operational problems in recent weeks as volumes have run up against working capacity limits, market sources said. When that happens, shippers are incentivized to find somewhere else to move their supply, ideally with more available space. In this case, it was the Gulf Coast. “My guess is that Cushing is very full, yes, and so crude must flow to the Gulf Coast,” said Anthony Starkey, analysis manager at Platts unit Bentek Energy.
